Young teeth can become vulnerable to decay as soon as they appear, but we can help to protect them by applying fissure sealants.
As the narrow grooves on the biting surfaces of the back teeth have narrow grooves which can be difficult to keep clean, bacteria can collect and possibly lead to tooth decay.
A fissure sealant is a clear coating that covers the tooth’s surface and prevents food and bacteria from settling in the grooves. It is usually applied to permanent teeth as they start to emerge (usually between 6-7 years) and can continue to be applied as further teeth come through.
If used in conjunction with regular brushing and flossing, fissure sealants can provide additional protection against decay.
